Choosing a different IP address
If you click the "Change..." button in the Monitor Editor, the following dialog box will appear:
IP Address
The first section of this dialog lets you specify the IP address of the service you're monitoring:
- Default "loopback" address (127.0.0.1)
Choose this option if you're running a normal service on your computer. This is the best choice for most situations, unless you have set up your computer with a special network configuration.
The loopback address 127.0.0.1 is a special address that is universally defined to mean "this computer".
- Other address for this computer
Choose this option if your computer has been configured with multiple IP addresses, and your service is not running on the default address.
This is often done with computers that are set up with "internal" and "external" addresses, to talk to both the office network and the Internet at large.
- Custom address
Choose this option if you have special circumstances, and the simpler options don't work for you. You can enter any IP address here, or even a domain name (e.g. "mycomputer.mycompany.com"). Fully- or partially-qualified domain names are acceptable, as long as your computer's network preferences are set accordingly.
Note: This option will allow you to enter any IP address you like, including that of a different computer altogether. You must ensure that the IP address you enter matches this computer, or PowerKey/Kick-off! will restart this computer if the other computer fails.
Port
The second section of this dialog lets you specify the port your service is using:
- Default for the service type
Choose this option if your service uses the standard port for the service type. This is the best choice for most situations, unless you have configured your service to use a different port.
Each type of Internet service has a designated standard port. For example, web (HTTP) servers use port 80 by default, and mail delivery (POP3) servers use port 110.
- Custom port
Choose this option if you have configured your service to run on a non-standard port. Enter the port number as an integer, matching the service you wish to monitor.
