Sophisticated Circuits Releases PowerKey Pro 650 "Admin"
with Automatic CPU Restart after Crashes and Power Outages
WOODINVILLE, WASHINGTON, June 4, 2002 -- Sophisticated Circuits, Inc. today released the "Admin" version of PowerKey Pro 650, the newest member of their award-winning family of intelligent, programmable power strips. This new version adds automatic CPU restart after computer crashes and after power outages, making it ideal for servers and other computers that must always be available.
The base "SOHO" model of PowerKey Pro 650 offers support for USB Macintoshes and OS X. It includes six individually controllable AC outlets and a built-in clock with powerful scheduling capabilities, making it easy to program peripherals to turn on and off with the system, automatically at specified times, or whenever the computer goes to sleep. A built-in telephone interface allows remote control via phone tones, and users can control outlets at will using the switches on the unit, the instant software buttons, custom Hot Keys, or with AppleScript.
Administrator Version for Professional Performance
The new "Admin" version of PowerKey Pro 650 includes all the functionality of the "SOHO" version and adds to it all the functionality of Sophisticated Circuits' dedicated USB restart device, Kick-off!. These new features give the PowerKey Pro 650 "Admin" the ability to automatically reboot unattended machines in case of problems, the ability to start up the computer whenever power returns after an outage, and logging of problems and recovery actions taken.
Sophisticated Circuits' patented auto-restart technology continuously monitors unattended computers for problems, and automatically and cleanly restarts the operating system, or reboots the entire machine, as necessary, in the event of an application or system crash, hang, or freeze, providing maximum uptime for servers and kiosks.
The auto-startup feature can turn on G4 servers whenever AC power is restored, with an optional delay to isolate the computer from harmful surges on the power lines. This feature is of particular interest to UPS users with software that cleanly shuts down the CPU when the battery runs down, since these computers otherwise remain off once power is restored.
PowerKey Pro "Admin" is also able to detect error conditions that can cause programs to fail but not actually crash in any application supporting Sophisticated Circuits' patent-pending Rebound! Technology. To enable this extra level of protection, developers need only add a few simple calls to their programs.
The "Admin" software also includes Sophisticated Circuits' iDo Script Scheduler software and monoLog logging software for OS 9, which lacks built-in support for these features.
Pricing and Availability
PowerKey Pro 650 "Admin" is shipping immediately and has an estimated street price of US$299. PowerKey Pro 650 "SOHO" remains at $199. Upgrades from the "SOHO" to the "Admin" version are $100. In a related press release, Sophisticated Circuits today announced that it is offering hardware upgrades from its ADB PowerKey Pro 600 to the USB PowerKey Pro 650.
